How To Choose The Right Size Banjo Head

The HEIGHT of the head (called "collar" or "crown" height) is the measurement from the TOP of the silver mounting band to the top surface of the head. ( Not from the very bottom to the very top.) Flat head tone rings (flat across the top of the head) take the High or Medium height.
Arch top tone rings ( have a raised circle in the head) take the Low or Medium height.

The DIAMETER of the head is measured from the inside to the inside of the silver mounting band. Sometimes the heads are slightly out of round, so measure in several places. 11" is standard for Gibson & most bluegrass banjos. Head size for the "Vega banjos is 10 15/16" in diameter.

MEASURE your banjo for the correct head diameter. Because your banjo's rim may be slightly out of round, take at least three diameter measurements at different points on the outside of the banjo's tone ring or rim top. Use the average diameter to the nearest 1/16" to order the correct size. Most modern banjos, including Mastertone-style instruments, us an 11"-diameter head. Modern makers of "old-time" open-back banjos usually use 11" (and sometimes 12") heads. Vintage banjos, however, may have a range of rim diameters from 10" to 12".
