Some Customer Comments
Hello Janet,
I bought a Goldtone skin head a couple of weeks ago and put it on
an old
pre- war pot, gold plated, with a Huber tone ring, and it really sounds
nice. It has a dry, very
soft musical tone with plenty of low end, but still good highs. After a
couple weeks of playing it is about "stretched in" so that I'm having to
tighten it less frequently. The tone of course varies with humdity, but
when its
right, it sounds so good, and is so easy to play the way the strings
respond, and there is none of the raspy sound and the overtones that
plastic produces.
I have tried a Fiberskyn head in the past, but it does not simulate
the sound of real skin at all. I played Sonny Osborne's "3" a number of
years ago when he had a skin head on it, and the sound stuck in my
head. I have tried a couple of old skin heads, but could never get much
out of them
because of condition due to age. Goldtone has a good product here with
a good mounting system.
The flesh hoop that the head mounts to is wider than a standard
Gibson stretcher band.
The hoop on the Goldtone head wouldn't fit down between the end of the
fingerboard and the tone ring.
I had to use a grinder to cut the flesh hoop down to fit at this point.
They need to modify the thickness of the flesh hoop to assure that this
is not a problem.
Thanks,
Joel A.
