Scales and Arpeggios for Five String Banjo by Pete Pardee
from Janet Davis Music - The Banjo Store
First self published in 1982. Now, it has been entirely reformatted in publishing quality music notation, graphics, photography and typography. The second edition, greatly improved and expanded, is perhaps the most thorough study of five string banjo technique and theory ever written. Major, minor, pentatonic, whole tone, diminished and blues scales are given in all keys through one and two octaves, then over the entire fingerboard in all 12 keys. Arpeggios of twenty six chord types are similarly given in all keys in two octaves or the entire fingerboard. A fiddle tune, original jazz composition and a classical piece are examples of the practical use of scales and arpeggios. Theres Arkansas Traveller in twelve keys, Blackwolf, Pat Clouds be-bop tune, and the Fugue from J. S. Bachs Violin Sonata No. 3, BWV 100515 pages. All exercises and examples are in both standard music notation (with the conjoined annotation as used in the Mel Bay publication BANJO PICKINGA Complete Method) and tablature.
This book introduces the reader to the banjo, the styles of music which can be learned, how to build scales, modes, chords, and music theory. There are guidelines on use of the book, practice routines and true musicianship.
Charts, diagrams and moveable scale patterns and appendices with melodic patterns, rhythms, picking and fretting hand coordinational exercises, chord symbols and more make this book an invaluable resource. In its entirety, SCALES AND ARPEGGIOS FOR FIVE STRING BANJO will, with diligent study and application, enable you to become a master musician on the banjo.
The G tuning is used, providing great facility in the areas dealt with, but the C tuning is also discussed.
